For Love Of Limitations

“The truth is, art often thrives on limitation.” — Charles Bernstein

In chapter three of his book, “Film Music And Everything Else!,” Charles Bernstein explores the often overlooked benefits and blessings that can be derived from the limitations imposed on creatives, especially those working in commercial media.

I have revisited this particular writing many times, and the funny thing is, the more I embrace the ideas from this passage, the more liberated my creativity seems to become. As Mr. Bernstein writes, “…too many choices and endless possibilities can actually inhibit the creative process.”

A statement that I imagine would ring true for any artist who has experienced their respective version of the blank page, canvas, DAW session, etc. It’s a strange irony that one can be paralyzed by unlimited options.

Almost counterintuitive.

Of course, not all limitations are created equal, and this is not to dismiss how cumbersome external and unreasonable limitations can be to the creative process. Still, I have bought into the mindset that within said limitations is an opportunity to push beyond the familiar, to be challenged beyond our comfort zone, and create something truly unique. Author Ryan Holiday would say, “The Obstacle Is The Way.”

Or, as the ancient Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius put it, “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.”

I think it is quite an extraordinary thing to lean into our limitations instead of bemoaning them. I have been practicing this, and so far, it has yielded some exciting results. The most recent is my newest album, set to be released September 1, 2024. Its very existence is a result of leaning into my limitations and making the most of what I have. I must say, it is my favorite piece of art I’ve created so far, both sonically and visually.

So stay tuned, and in the meantime, I invite you to lean into those pesky limitations and embrace the creative journey in all its mess and beauty.

Be well and see you on the next one!
